Presumed exilipes Hoary Redpoll (left) with Common Redpoll (right)
Observation details
There were two redpolls among the flock here that stood out as paler and especially grayer dorsally. These bird were finely streaked below, one with thin and sparse streaks from breast to flanks and another a bit more streaked. I focused on the less streaked and more apparent Hoary but felt both were this species (type!) of redpoll. In addition to the above grayish tones to the scapulars, I noted a somewhat more bull-necked look to the two presumed Hoary Redpolls, and their hindnecks were paler and more finely streaked than Commons. On the most sparsely streaked bird, I could see that the center of the undertail coverts were essentially unmarked white (maybe a wisp of a dark streak there); I could only see the other bird's undertail laterally, and it appeard all white. The rumps on both birds was white and apparently unmarked (but hard to see unless wings drooped to side; otherwise streaked uppertail coverts were seen and could be mistaken as rump). Both birds seemed to show more restricted but perhaps rich warm buff in the throat (buff on Commons duller and more extensive and less contrasting). The faces and bills seemed more smushed in on these birds compared to the Common Redpolls.
