Observation details
First or second-year bird. Continuing at that site, present from at least 24 Jan to 24 Feb 2007. Early that morning soon after I arrived at the refuge, I saw a large dark raptor perched at the top of a tree near the intersection of Van Staalduinen Rd and S Pungo Rd. As I approached in my car, I began to see a golden coloration on the bird's nape from the reflection of the morning sun. As my car got closer the bird took flight, revealing its large size, faint white patches at the base of the secondaries, and a white band at the base of the tail. Lost track of it after it flew away but saw it later that morning soaring near two Bald Eagles. In picture it is the bird on far right.
