Observation details
When I originally found this bird, I was struck by the very pale orange throat and buffy forehead. I have seen Cave Swallow before, but not recently, so I reached out to a few people and eventually a group accumulated to view the bird. We were treated to some pretty incredible views as it repeatedly circled in front of the stretch of shore we had occupied. We continued to discuss the ID and compare photos for a couple hours, before moving on, ultimately puzzled. After photos were reviewed, and we have made ourselves more aware of all the subtle intricacies that separate these two species (Cliff and Cave), Ethan Monk concluded that the brown back and white rump likely indicate retained juvenile plumage, effectively accounting for the lighter throat and overall odd appearance. Could not have said it better myself. Fun bird!
