Observation details
Lone female-plumaged bird not associating with other finches. Feeding on seeds of Arizona Ash in Tucson Audubon Restoration Area across the street from the Paton Center yard. Head pattern too bold for House Finch. Bill did not have pointy, straight-edged appearance of Cassin’s Finch but instead was more blunt with slightly curved culmen. Breast with short, thick streaks and faint buffy wash across chest. This individual had unstreaked white undertail coverts. When the sun peeked out from behind the clouds, the bird showed the distinct greenish tinge to the back and rump of the expected western subspecies californicus.
