Media notes
Hoary in flight
Observation details
Rare, irruption. One dark individual that initially stood out due to its short bill. Its flank streaking was similar to nearby Common Redpolls, although the anterior streaks on the sides of the breast were finer/neater. The throat was cleaner whitish buff. The undertail coverts had only a single streak, and the rump was pale and lightly streaked. Some Common Redpolls can appear as pale as this individual, especially on the flanks and uppertail coverts, although the shortness of the bill and a clean hairline streak on the undertail coverts is atypical for Common and supportive of Hoary.
