Observation details
While putting out some towels to dry in our backyard we first heard this dove calling from somewhere in the distance to the south of us. I thought it sounded like a White-winged Dove at that time but we could never see it or really tell where it was. I tried playing a recording but got no response and then it stopped calling. A short time later (5:15p) I was sitting inside when I heard it again but this time louder so we rushed outside and it sounded like it was in our yard. Priscilla finally located it near the top of one of the coast redwoods. It was very difficult to see well as we were looking nearly straight up and could only see part of the bird through a hole in the needles. All we could see was the side of the face at times and finally we saw the side of the bird where the white leading edge of the wing was pretty obvious in binoculars. I then rushed inside to get my camera and was able to manage a few poor photos and one video before the bird disappeared. A quick search of the neighborhood along Porter Creek Ave. failed to relocate the bird.
