Observation details
Tentative identification as Winter Wren, but I may change the species to Winter/Pacific Wren later upon a more thorough review of the spectrogram with more comparisons with confirmed recordings elsewhere. Based on my comparisons so far, the recordings lineup well with previous West Coast WIWR call note recordings. The lower end of the ‘chimp/klip’ note bottoms out just below 4 kHz on spectrogram. The bird was found earlier today by Courtney and Caleb. I managed recordings of its ‘chimp’ notes and chatter call. The ‘chimp’ calls sounded juicier and lower pitched than the drier and higher pitches call notes that I typically expect from Pacific Wren. The bird was pretty standoffish and would move any time I attempted for a closer inspection. The bird appeared rather similar in overall plumage to PAWR, though the breast was pale and I could easily make out a distinctive supercilium. The light however was dappled and contrasty so I can’t make too much of the visual appearance. I did not manage any decent photographs. The voice was very atypical from what I would expect of PAWR, but I’m interested in what the consensus is from multiple observer recordings. Fingers crossed.
