Observation details

"In afternoon went past the waterfall to rock where white-fronted terns are breeding. Black-backed gulls also nesting in vicinity. The terns had not constructed any nest at all, the egg being merely placed on the bare rock. One measured 1 7/8 inches x 1 1/4 inches, and was greenish stone heavily blotched with sepia and underlying ones of dull grey. The young birds were of a light colour mottled on the back with grey. The adult terns were very courageous and repeatedly flew over our heads, swooping down and snapping their bills.
