Very loud calls of immature Barn Owl from inside hollow tree
Observation details
I have been misidentifying the nestling owls in the palm tree trunk as screech owls when they were actually Barn Owls. Upon entering the area I immediately heard very loud cries which I recognized as those of an immature Barn Owl.. Until now the noises which originated inside the hollow trunk of the standing dead Royal Palm were presumed to be those of EASO because I was hearing an adult calling not far from the tree several times. They were also very low in volume, presumably because the owlets were quite small. A few other times I misidentified the calls as being those of an EASO when I did not see or hear an adult EASO. In these cases I will go back and delete the erroneous entries and replace them with the Barn Owl species. .this morning an owl flew from the top of the tree and I was able to follow it in flight. It showed white under parts and was larger than the EASO. I never got a face-on view. However the pattern of very light underparts and the larger size point strongly to it being a Barn Owl. Further I used my app to imitate the call of the immature barn owl and they immediately responded from inside the tree trunk. (the second brief segment followed my use of the app-- the calls on the first longer recording were spontaneous. I got good recordings which demonstrate how much louder and distinctive their call is. At this point I believe there is only one owlet calling from inside the trunk. Earlier I thought I heard perhaps more than one. .This nest is just across the road from the Barn Owl nest which was active last season. It is most likely the same pair as the first tree trunk is now abandoned.
