Observation details
**rare; minimum count of three males and one female, though Tim Lenz probably saw 7 birds total. eBird had no prior records for August in the Basin, but one had been seen here a week prior by Steve Fass (and entered in eBird). A major movement appears to be afoot in Maine, New Hampshire, and elsewhere in the Northeast, with a recent report from Quabbin Reservoir in western Mass. Photos (poor, but identifiable) by Iliff and Lenz. This was our first stop and it turned to be a good choice. We trolled tape for White-winged Crossbill, which may have been what attracted the group we saw, although we initially saw just two, then 3, and then four. They mostly ignored the tape but did obviously respond by flying down towards us at one point, although light was poor for photos. --MJI Marshall Iliff and I saw at least four, and maybe up to seven WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS this morning near the clearing on Salt Rd. in Summerhill. Most of the birds we saw were males but there were also at least two females. They flew over calling and fed near the tops of the spruce trees. --TCL
