Observation details
Continuing at previously reported location. Heard first calling in pine tree behind condo building just before 0906. Briefly seen in leafless tree in front of building a minute later before it flew off. [Possible calling/flyby again at 0921.] Finally settled into leafless tree, where it was viewed continuously, from 1006 until I left at 1030. Hummingbird with green back and peachy/buffy sides about the size of an Anna’s Hummingbird. Tail longer than wings and currently showing a white tip (tail feathers missing?). Speckled throat. (Interestingly, while I observed the Broad-tailed repeatedly chase off both of the Costa’s from the feeder, at one point the female Costa’s landed a foot away from the Broad-tailed in the leafless tree and stayed there unmolested by it for several minutes. Only when the male Costa’s started hovering close by as well did it finally chase both of them off.) Photos and audio.
