Media notes
Juveniles on nest being fed by adult male.
Observation details
3 nestlings in nest in Monte Redondo. Only the male attended the nest, guarding it and eventually feeding at least two of the nestlings (the largest ones). A third nestling is only 10% the size of the largest one, a real runt, and we did not observe it being fed. A week ago, the adult male was sitting on the nest so either the young were small 7 days ago, or perhaps they hadn't come out of the eggs yet. The adult female was perched about 25 meters away, where she has perched the last few weeks, and was sunning with wings spread, showing that her entire set of flight feathers on the wings have shed and are now just growing back in pins. Seems she is leaving all of the feeding duties to the male! The male was seen in flight flying in from upstream (where there are good fishing areas in several artificial irrigation ponds), with no obvious wing molt noted.
