Observation details
Although some experts consulted after the tour was completed regarded this bird as a Caspian Plover (Charadrius asiaticus), most participants believed it to be Oriental Plover (Charadrius veredus), the latter at least equally likely based on vagrant occurrence to Ile Alphonse and the Seychelles. A photograph of this bird in flight captured both by Mark Oberle and by Dale Herter (attached, linked) clearly show dark underwings, a diagnostic identification mark for 'veredus.'
