Observation details
Mixed with 22 Common Redpolls, foraging on birch catkins. This bird's overall more white and frosty appearance immediately made it stand out from surrounding brownish Common Redpolls. A molt limit in the primary coverts (new inner, old middle and outer) suggests an immature. Classic blunt face structure due to very bushy lores obscuring inner 80% of upper mandible. Weak/faint flank streaking. White base color to entire back (versus two white stripes in center of back as on female/immature Common). White base color to faintly-streaked crown. Extensive white in wing coverts and primary/secondary edging. Only one streak in undertail coverts. Light-tan wash in crown, nape, and face. Photos and video.
