Observation details
Battling Yellow-bellied Sapsucker males: We have had two males and one female coming into the feeders for some time now, with each easily tolerating the other two, however, it was obvious they were subordinate to the Red-bellied Woodpeckers. A third male came in early this afternoon, quickly taking ownership of one set of suet feeders, even surprising the Red-bellied Woodpeckers that believed the could easily dominate him. The new arrival says, “nothing do’in” to the RbWp and now sits at the top of the “hierarchical feeder chain.” The photos are of him after chasing down another male YbSs, and in an interlocked tussle, fell some 12’ from a tree. This chasing-tussling-falling-more attacking-repeat, the pursuit went on for several minutes.
