Observation details
All three resting on the North side of the lake (close to the road). Heat distortion and distance made things a bit tricky, but overall sizes were not vastly larger than the Canada Geese loafing adjacent to these birds. Necks appeared slimmer than I might expect for Trumpeter. Black bills shorter and more petite than might be expected for Trumpeter. The three spent most of the time with their heads tucked under their wings but would occasionally show their heads. In profile, the border between the bill and face appeared vertical rather than more sloped as is typical of Trumpeter. Long necks, short black bills and lack of any black on the primaries eliminate other predominantly white waterfowl (e.g. Snow Goose or American White Pelican). Photo isn't great but demonstrates the bill structure on the rightmost individual. Tundra Swan is annual in San Miguel and/or Colfax County in any given year but seldom reported in Mora County. This is probably partly due to coverage but also the tendency for many of the water bodies in Mora to freeze mid-winter.
