Observation details
My first ever record for Cortland County. Irruption Year, exact count. Mixture of males and females. Were first seen while walking the loop trail at the Visitor Center. They all flew in a large group giving jip jip jip calls. They landed in the climbing trees along the driveway. Actively eating pine cone seeds of Pinus strobus. Males dull red with a dull black wing. Females are green with a dull black wing. You could hear the crossbills stripping apart the pine cone scales and hear and audible crunching sound. They were around for about 30 minutes and then flew off in an easterly direction. I was able to get decent photos.
