Observation details
I was standing in the hedgerow taking pictures of the Sandhill Cranes that spent the night in our pasture when a I saw dark bird flying toward me across pasture. It was very dark brown with heavily streaked undersides. Flying very fast and direct within about 30 feet of me. It has sharp triangular pointy wings. No real color other than uniformly dark and streaky. I couldn’t get my camera on it fast enough. Larger than a kestrel. Size, color, and flight style leads me to Merlin. Ok now that I finished typing my description I found where it landed and it is indeed a Merlin. I have pics now.
