Observation details
Yet another amazing SJC find by Diane Reed! I owe her a beer for this one. I also owe beers to Kevin and Marie who slogged through the mud and marsh to relocate this bird after it flew north from where it had been originally found at the landing. Lori and I walked the muddy quarter to half mile north from the landing along the edge of the impoundment to where Kevin and Marie had the Godwit keyed up in the scope. The spot was maybe 30-40 yards north of a wooden pole marked with orange flagging tape. The bird was about 65-75yards out to the west from our vantage point on the shoreline. This species is rare here in any season but certainly even more unexpected in June! We all had excellent scope views. The Godwit was in stunning breeding plumage with an unbarred red chest and belly. It had a bicolored upturned bill, dark lores, pale supraloral, and black legs. The neck and head were gray-brown and streaked. The bird never did oblige us with views of its underwings or tail but I felt that the lack of belly barring and lack of red in the head and most of the neck were sufficient to rule out Black-tailed Godwit and that the lack of red in the head and neck and the boldly bicolored bill were sufficient to rule out Bar-tailed Godwit. The hard part is deciding what beer to raise to this great find by Diane. Since I'm fresh out of Bandwagon's Six Mile Saison, I am going with a Prairie Phantasmagoria. This beer's name pretty well sums up finding a HUGO in FLORIDA in JUNE! Phantasmagoria is a double IPA that is low in malt flavors, but high in hops. Prairie brews this beer as a nood to the big hoppy beers of the west coast. Loads of citrusy and piney hops are used at the end of the boil and in the fermenter to make this beer a hop experience.
