Calls while perched from a female; the first cut is natural, the remainder after playback of chase call.

Observation details

This bird was in front of an apartment building inside the Mission Lakes Country Club community, a few blocks from where we are staying. The community is private, but not gated. We anticipate that prolonged or frequent visits by birders looking for this bird may generate complaints from the residents. We ask that anyone who comes to look for the bird behave discreetly and appropriately. Female, perched for 20 minutes or so near a feeder by the apartments (33.977187,-116.540361). Photographed and recorded, responded vigorously to playback of Broad-tailed but only half-heartedly to Rufous/Allen’s. Rufous on sides and tail more limited than expected for Rufous, notably larger than nearby Costa’s. Analysis of the recording showed a very close match to recordings of Broad-tailed call and clear differences to calls of Rufous/Allen’s, with a higher pitched note that was a bit longer and more clearly downslurred.
