Observation details
Large surprise, though a pelagic a week before picked up one, and had nice photos. A somewhat unexpected species off the Kona coast, which may simply reflect that very few pelagic have been run in Kona waters in January due to the seas. Both this and last week trips were run under NOAA small craft warnings. Compact totally dark shearwater, smaller than WTSH. Very dark chocolate brown, which was so dark, that in some light looked almost black. Pointed at both ends, small blackish beak, blackish feet and legs. We were able to see these features as the birds flew close to the vessel numerous times. Flew close to water with rapid wing beats and short glides.
