Reddish Egret, Old Creek, Cayucos, San Luis Obispo County, California, 10 August 2006, Tom M. Edell
Observation details
I noticed someone approaching the lagoon with a camera and looked to see what he was photographing and saw a small active egret that turned out to be a juvenile Reddish Egret. The bird had an all dark bill and legs, a pale yellow eye, a mauve colored head, neck and undersides, a bluish back and wings, mauve in the lesser coverts and I believe the greater coverts. It fed actively and Nick told me he'd seen it spread its wings to shade the water while it fed. I managed to get a single photo of the bird which flew off to the north soon after I saw it. The lighting was poor most of the time the bird was in view and as it flew from one side of the lagoon to the other. I thought I was going to have time to study the bird, and was rather casual about noting features as I talked with Nick Freeman who found the bird and was photographing it.
