Observation details
Two adult birds seen in a flowering gum tree at dusk, preparing for flying out for the night. Two others heard, one each side of the Whanganui River. Contemporaneous sound recordings by Peter Frost verify that these could not have been the birds seen in the gum tree. Calling from one bird on the true left bank of the river ceased at 9.20pm. Calls from the other bird on the true right bank ceased at 9.30pm. Neither of the two birds were seen flying out but may have left below the sky line. The attached 1.5 minute sound record is extracted from a 15 minute recording. Some editing has removed extraneous sounds: traffic noise and pontoon creaking. The frequency of calls is unaltered and in most cases is from a Nankeen night heron on the riverbank, just 30 meters upstream from the pontoon. Another bird across the river was responding and can be heard at 1.34 & 1.35 minutes into the record.
