Observation details
Second cycle (3cy). Pale iris. Greenish bill, dark tip. Dusky primaries with whiteish edges. Second basic coverts very whiteish with brown internal markings . Grey mantle . Dusky markings too rectrices and undertail coverts. Diffuse dusky stealing to neck, nape face and upper breast. 01/04/2024: revisited this record after seeing a lot more Thayer's Gulls on Vancouver Island and discussing this record with experienced folk here. The darkness of the primaries does fit thayeri which can also be lighter than this with more internal markings, however, it also fits kumlieni. If this bird were on Vancouver Island it would definitely standout from the flock with a more thayeri head structure (round and with small delicate bill), pale grey mantle and frosty immature coverts. I originally listed this bird as kumlieni, though I was advised that the local consensus was thayeri, I now think it's best listed as thayeri/kumlieni.
