Media notes
This photo very clearly displays the characteristic thick-based profile of this species' heavy bill and the greenish sheen often seen at its base. Proper light angle is imporant to a good view of the latter. Also worthy of note is the large dark eye and the gentle slope of the forehead.
Observation details
Only one Masked Duck was found. It provided multiple opportunities to take photos, both with a DSLR camera with zoom telephoto (75mm-300mm; set at 275mm) and, using the same DSLR camera (hand-held) with a 50mm lens attached, to photograph through a scope (no adapter), the combination of which provided approximately 20X magnification. This individual was remarkably cooperative for photography as it relaxed reasonably close to the shoreline, with only minimal movement, for the duration of our visit.
