Observation details
Initially seen sat on ground, with Kentish Plovers and Little Stints very close by. Clearly much larger than latter, and roughly size of former. Typical calidrid shape though, and with long bill, obviously longer than head width, gradually downcurved and with slightly bulbous tip. Length probably approaching Curlew Sandpiper, but not as downcurved—clearly one of the longer-billed subspecies. Brownish-grey in colour, with much streaking on light brown breast sides, whiter centre, and more spotted towards flanks. Not the clean white appearance of Curlew Sand. Similarly streaked on head, especially ear coverts, whitish diffuse supercilium meeting above bill and strongest in front of eye compared to behind. Prominent brownish mark on lores. Upperparts with dark greyish centred feathers, fringed buff. In flight, dark greyish-black centre to white-sided rump easily seen. Called in flight 2 or 3 times: a familiar (for us Brits) slightly buzzy 'trrreet'. 1st-winter.
