Observation details
Possibly the biggest and best surprise of the whole walk came when I heard a strange cheeping coming from the base of a dead tree... it turned out to be a hidden Pardalote, but the thing that was hiding expertly in a clump of leaves, totally and utterly silent and still, a perfectly poised robber of nests?? A very young, tatty Butcherbird, right in front of me!!! Not only that, but I also heard another very young bird calling not at all far away, choking on the beautiful fluting of its elders; this strongly implies that they've just recently left the nest, which in turn implies that, somewhere on our land, a Butcherbird nest has seen a successful breeding season for the first time ever!!!
