Observation details
Seen from side by 4 observers. Bird was perched by itself, half hidden, in the top of dense low tree in dry woods. We noted the purplish neck & dark gray body and narrow neck. The red eye and yellow bill with red base short bill was what made us pretty sure what it was. Steve took many pics before a falcon flew low and all the nearby mourning doves took off with this pigeon tailing them. Before we looked at pics I looked up Rock dove. Compared dark adult to our bird. Ours has a longer tail. Pics included. We were right at "Hidalgo/Starr county line sign" on 7 mile road; bird was just inside Hidalgo.
