Observation details
At around 7:55 am while standing in the Headquarters parking lot, I heard a unique call. Taking a quick second to register what I was hearing, I quickly looked around in hopes of spotting what sounded like two individuals. About 15 seconds into the sighting, I quickly spotted a Female that flew in for a brief moment in a deciduous tree. Following that I noticed a beautiful male perched higher up in more dense trees. By now it felt like the heavens opened up with grosbeaks as it sounded like there were at least 5 around me. I quickly ran to my car to grab my camera in hopes to get some photos. Unfortunately, I left my SD card at home in my computer. So I promptly grabbed my scope and ran to the road. I got a female perched in the scope for a brief moment but she moved before I could get any digiscopes. I then found the flock feeding in a pine a little up the road. There about 5-7 individuals were visible. These birds fed there for about a minute before taking off over the field towards Chattlton Rd. When then took off I was able to get an accurate count of 10 individuals! The specific pine they were in were separate from the main stand directly across from the headquarters. Just right if this stand, the first pine just to the right of the deciduous trees. Pine grosbeaks here have been present since the end of November and the later parts of December. Wether these birds are the same as the ones in 2020, I can’t say, but it does seem the numbers are increasing. These birds will likely hang around for the rest of winter as it seems there’s a great food source for them here. Birders who come here in hopes of getting the amazing chance of seeing these birds, I recommend when posting to make sure to include the exact time you had them. These birds are possibly following a schedule so to speak, working the area at certain times. This could help learn about the habitats of this flock.
