Observation details
flushed from short grass on cropduster airstrip, west side of Holly Grove Road south of Silo Road. Noticeably smaller than Lapland Longspurs, with which it briefly flocked when flying around. Made distinctive squeaky 'kiddle' call when flushed (see recording). Behavior somewhat similar to Sprague's Pipit when flushed, flying up rather high (although perhaps not as high as expected for Sprague's) and circling long distances (up to 1/4 mile or more) before landing again in the grass of the airstrip. Saw and heard the same bird here yesterday, loosely associating with Horned Larks. Two members of our group saw white tail feathers when it flew. Very skittish and skulky bird--never could get a look at it while on ground.
