Observation details
A very lucky find, at the end of a spring spent looking for rarities on the river instead of in the woodlots. Two birds appeared over the dam shortly after 5pm, made a long circle around the area, and headed downriver into Beaver County. The record was substantially documented for PORC (and accepted) and was further detailed in Pennsylvania Birds, Volume 24 (2), pp.74-76. Photos below show complete or nearly complete red bills, gray body with wings set forward, long tail, and most importantly, a thin, even gray line on the underside of the wing, extending along the seven outer primaries, thus distinguishing from Common Tern which shows more of a dark wedge on the outer primaries that is typically limited to the outer six.
