Observation details
Irruption year. Initially reported yesterday by Gillian Smits, continuing just east of the parking area where previously reported. Very pale overall, with only a few faint flank streaks, and clean white undertail coverts. Rump not seen well in the field, but photos show an extensive white rump with only the slightest hint of marking near the base of the tail. Chest and belly very pale, with a faint pinkish wash on the chest, and some pale buffy coloration around the throat and face. Upperparts relatively pale with classic HORE "frostiness", and a broad, white wing bar. Bill very small and especially short. This bird did not give an impression of being larger/rounder than Common Redpoll, but no individuals for direct comparison while we were watching. This combination of field marks seems a good fit for the Southern exilipes subspecies, which of the two HORE subspecies is the more likely to be found in southern New England, especially in irruption winters such as this.
