Observation details
Continuing young male, seen foraging with a group of American Wigeons in the grass on the Northeast corner of the pond (in front of the apartment complex). Was able to get rather close, but a resident eventually ran by and flushed the flock. Same size and structure as the American Wigeons, with a dull cherry red head and buffy gold forehead. Upperparts cool gray, flanks mostly gray with some buffy mottling (which I believe is a feature consistent with males of this age and not necessarily an indication this is a hybrid bird). Some mottling on the undertail and uppertail surface (a few retained juvie feathers present on the rump). Otherwise silvery rump. Greenish speculum and extensive white wing patch. Much more evident/extensive than American Wigeon. Bluish-gray bill with black comissure. Silent.
