Observation details
Seen in the area the last two days, first by Brendan Murtha. I was there a long time, no hawk, but as the saying goes, all’s well that ends well. Hung around the overlook for half an hour, then ventured up route 2 for a couple of miles, then back to the overlook. After a bit Sara G and Janice J. arrived. Really nice to have company, though still no hawk. A bit more and Eric H arrived, now we had 6 good eyes, still nothing. There was a flock of Snow Buntings flying around on the south side of the river. I left to go check them out, ditto Eric a bit later. Sara and Janice headed home, Chris to Hall Tavern Farm just up the road, where he knew the boss, and also where he saw the hawk, which some crows had just flushed. The bird headed past where we’d been and across the river to where Eric still was. But I was on my way back to route 2. Saw Chris, got the news hw’d seen the bird, So I headed back across the river. Along Depot Road, there was a raptor soaring above me. Bingo. Light morph. Black wrists, black belly, and wide dark terminal tail band immediately apparent. Gorgeous.
