Observation details
Irruption. Huge masses present. Astounding clouds of birds swirling over the fields. Initially the redpolls were together in one giant flock. This number is based on photographing a large portion of the flock, roughly 3/4, after it left behind some individuals and headed far away to the north. The photographs were of two non-overlapping portions of the flock after the birds were about 0.5 mi away. At the time I estimated I photographed 2/3 of the flock in those two photos, with the remaining 1/3 scattered outside of the photo. Later on the computer I counted 500+ birds in each of those two photographs (ML294836541 and ML294836561). 1000 photographed individuals + 500 unphotographed + 500 that remained at the southern end of the field.
