Observation details
Rain tapered off at 09:30. Low cloud ceiling. The first flock of shorebirds arrived on the gravel bar (about 400 yards long and up to 60 yards wide) soon after the rain ceased. River level at Calico Rock---5 feet (relatively low). Scoped the shorebirds from the back deck. Photographed with Canon 60D with 400 mm lens. Mixed flock of 3 Semipalmated Plovers and 8 Semipalmated Sandpipers. Excellent photos of both. This flock was flushed several times by an aggressive Killdeer (accompanied lately by 2 large chicks) and finally driven off after lingering on the gravel bar for 30 minutes. Semipalmated Plovers are rarely observed on the ground in the upper White River drainage.
