Observation details
First seen at about 10:40 at North Point Marina by Eric Johnson. He watched it fly off to the south. Adam and I were at Waukegan Harbor already, so went down to check the beach for gulls and on the off-chance the Brant ended up there. Adam was scoping the gulls on the south piers and I was scanning around with binoculars, when I noticed the Brant on the north pier. We quickly put word out and many people were able to see it throughout the day. Smaller than Canada Goose, with a black head, neck, and breast, light underparts with conspicuously paler flanks and vent, dark brown back, and a small white patch on the side of the neck just under the head. Seemed to be feeding on algae on the pier.
