Observation details
Quite unexpected. Seen in the company of a male Common Goldeneye, believe this is a 1st year female given the bill patterning (limited color rather than the entirely orangey-yellow or coral colored bill of an older female). Overall appeared slightly smaller than the male Common, with a shorter and more compact bill. Bill was dark with a concise orangey splotch near the tip of the upper mandible. The bill did at times appear a little long depending on the angle, but it was never near as hefty as that of the Common. Head shape was consistently quite rounded at the crown and nape with a steep forehead, consistent with what I'd expect from a Barrow's, lacking the sloping forehead (into a bulky bill) of a Common. Head color was a cold nutmeg, darker and cooler in color than the warm chocolate brown typical of female Common Goldeneyes (though the overcast skies may have effected this impression).
