Observation details
Two individuals appeared on board the tall ship Kalmar Nyckel while offshore on a voyage from New Castle, DE to Bridgeport, CT. Both individuals fed aggressively while on board; a swarm of biting flies had also joined the ship off the NJ coast and the crew was swatting them by the dozens. The two nuthatches followed behind the swatters and ate the fresh carcasses off the deck. Both individuals were still on board at nightfall; the ship entered New York Harbor in the small hours of the next morning; by dawn in the East River, only one individual remained. This bird stayed aboard until we came alongside in Bridgeport, CT to wait out severe weather; it was not seen after docking. Please enjoy this photo of one individual expectantly waiting for me to supply it with a fly.
