Observation details
Conservative estimate. Many groups spread throughout the pond. Oftentimes intermingled with SBDO as well as every other kind of shorebird present, especially in the sleeping or preening flocks assembled along the southeastern shore. Several traits used in conjunction to separate individuals from neighboring short-billed individuals: 1) bulkier overall shape and larger size, 2) browner, more contrasted wing coverts with noticeably darker centers, 3) slower, more deliberate foraging style that prefers deeper water (based on personal experience), 4) darker and more solidly slate gray colored breast 5) when visible, thinner white barring on tail, 6) when visible, less tapering of the bill near the base paired with longer bill (sometimes very noticeably longer, other times less reliable). Audible high-pitched “keek” calls heard and recorded at one point from a flock that had moved closer to forage.
