Observation details
At least 5, possibly 6 or 7 hunting in the field at the intersection of Hogmire and Nations Rd. I first saw one owl at 3:20 pm and watched until the light faded around 5:00 pm when I last observed 5 owls, several of them interacting at the back of the field. They had pale, creamy undersides, brown backs, tawny primaries with black tips, and large, round faces. Wingbeats were stiff, bouncy, and erratic pulses. They flew low over the field to hunt, occasionally hovering and periodically dropping into the field for minutes at a time. The first owl present clashed with the NOHA a few times when they crossed paths. Several were calling, a horse, raspy and sometimes whispered “kee-oww” call as it began to get dark. Such a joy to be able to bear witness to these owls!!
