Observation details
Stakeout. Drooping left wing. See photos. This petite denizen of mature Red Fir forests in the western mountains is an uncommon migrant in the San Francisco Bay Area but very rare in winter. A member of the cryptic flycatcher genus "Empidonax" showing wing-bars and an eyering, identification depends on a suite of more subtle characters including a relatively narrow bill with a variably dark lower mandible, long wing with extended primary projection and short tail. Note also the whitish throat and somewhat flattened eyering shape.
