Vocalizations recorded as a pair of Cassin's Kingbirds were chasing the Myiarchus flycatcher (presumed to be Brown-crested Flycatcher).
Observation details
Continuing bird, found by Eddie Monson 12/25/20. Not much to add to my description of the bird from two days ago (https://ebird.org/checklist/S77979596). I found it by the picnic area at 9 am and stayed with it for more than an hour, taking some photographs in different lighting. It was near other birds today, so I could note that it was a large bird, comparable in size to Cassin's kingbirds, which chased it around a couple of times. My main goal today was to try to get some recordings of the bird's vocalizations. I tried playback of Brown-crested Flycatcher a couple of times (and Great Crested Flycatcher once) on my cellphone, but though the bird cocked its head to look at me when I did this, I never heard it make any vocalizations when I was looking at it (so that I would know it was this bird, and not one of the other birds making a weird call). I kept a recorder running on and off for at least 30 minutes, hoping to hear (and see on the spectrogram) something on the tape when I got home. Upon reviewing the tape, I found a sequence just as the bird was being harassed by some Cassin's kingbirds, where the bird vocalized for a second or two in an agitated state. This is a short series of rapid calls at the beginning of the attached recording. The phrase sounds to me like a good match for Brown-crested Flycatcher. For example, it sounds identical to the phrase at the 16 second mark here: https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/40539. Feedback from KLG that it is a Brown-crested Flycatcher call.
