Observation details
In the field, at a distance, I over-confidently called this pale bird a Kumlien's Gull because its size was sufficiently small, no bigger than a Cali Gull in overall body bulk. However, in the photos I'm now seeing that the bill is an issue -- it's longer and thicker than expected for Kumlien's. That being said, the paleness of the wingtips (similar to Glaucous-winged Gull), and especially the complete lack of a dark secondary bar, make this not a pure Thayer's for me.
