Observation details
Female swimming/foraging with female AMWI in eastern arm. See photos. Structurally distinguishable from accompanying female AMWI in having a smaller head; steeper forehead; and smaller, slimmer bill. Pattern of upperwing coverts, shown in last photo, indicates a first-winter bird. Neither female wigeon showed much blackish feathering at the base of the bill. This bird was more rufescent than the accompanying AMWI on the sides/flanks; edges of the wing feathers. Possibly a hybrid, as the head was less obviously ruddy than seems typical for female EUWI; the mantle was not grayish; and the underwings showed a fairly extensive whitish patch in the underwing. Note, however, that the underwing pattern is comparable to that of this female in Sweden: https://macaulaylibrary.org/asset/273141841#_ga=2.214930773.37589799.1608834586-246320946.1607292145.
