Observation details
Though in-hand photos used here, the bird was seen in other areas and will therefore, be considered as a sighting. Hatching year female captured in Net #7; processed, photographed and data recorded by Elizabeth Golden, Michelle Davis and Robin Diaz, Cape Florida Banding Station banders. Bird seen off-and-on through 22 October and was recaptured twice in Nets 3 and 12. This bird remained in the midst of the banding area and was extremely wary. It was skittish and would flush if someone approached from a long distance. Curiously, it was never seen on the ground, rather, it seemed to prefer 3/4 area of Green Buttonwood and Strangler Fig trees. At this time there was a lot of ripe Virginia Creeper fruit and the bird was observed eating this three times. After much discussion, it was decided not to make public the occasional net captures and sightings for the following reasons: Since the bird remained within a tight area, birders and photographers searching for the bird would essentially shut down the monitoring and banding station for the final six weeks of the fall season. It was deemed more important to continue gathering banding data than it was to invite the public to try to search for the bird. Secondly, this is a restored hardwood hammock and a fragile habitat. To expect birders and photographers to respect the protocol of remaining on the net lane trails, was unrealistic. At our request, several local birders searched for the bird, which we hoped would become more readily viewable outside the banding area. It was seen outside (just barely) the banding area once by Mike and Rangel Diaz. This is entered into eBird as an incomplete list for historical data purposes.
