You can barely see small white tips to primaries in this view
Observation details
First noticed by Mary Nemecek as Pete and I were scanning lake for BAGO. This was a bird that I originally thought was in definitive basic plumage but reduced spots on primary tips suggests a 3rd winter bird as also suggested by Bill Rowe and Doug Willis- bird notiecably larger and darker mantled than adjacent Ring-billed Gull but smaller than nearby HEGU that had less rounded head and thicker bills. Mantel a medium shade of dark gray; primaries black with small white tips, white tertial crescent contrasting with medium gray mantle ; underparts white; rounded white head but with dark smudgyness/blurry streaking, especially around the eye and nape and upper breast; bill long and yellowish with good gonydeal angle; spots near tip but hard to see color in bad light; iris looked dark but again hard to see in poor light.
