Observation details
This sapsucker seems to have all the characteristics of a male 1st-year Red-naped: 1) black-&-white face with red crown, 2) white chin, red throat, and spotty black bib, 3) a very small faint patch of red in nape, 4) incomplete black border between red throat and whitish moustachial stripe, 5) two distinct rows of pale barring on back, 6) juvenile-like barring on breast (the last juvenile characteristic to completely molt away, according to Mlodinow, et al., in Birding Vol 38 (6), Page 48. This article describes "many first-cycle Red-napeds retaining a juvenal breast pattern well into winter."). We see no vestige of any cross with red-breasted sapsucker, and none of the features mentioned above seem to require any element from yellow-bellied.
