Media notes
Very close individual feeding on aster seeds. This bird seemed especially large and stood out from the group.
Observation details
Group of three imm./adult female along south end of Big Eddy, and a group of 5 between the ponds including one adult male and one especially large imm./adult female. One in this flock let me approach within 1.5' as I tried to sneak by on the trail without disturbing it. Most of my time here was spent watching and photographing the three along the south end, which were feeding in the dry aster/goldenrod along the water's edge and sometimes perching on the surface of the frozen pond to pick up fallen seeds. Also foraged on ground among the grass. One browner, streakier individual, one with an especially bright "poll", and one very gray individual. When the COHA flew over, all three birds froze on their weed stalks until the hawk was gone. I love these birds!!
