Observation details
***Mega; second record for the Cape according to eBird (presumably a few others were seen historically??). Part of a solid fall movement of this species, with dozens of individuals seen moving at Tadoussac in Quebec as early as September and a number seen in southern Vermont and New Hampshire by late October. At least three were seen in western Mass during the first ten days of November. A stunning Parid, slightly larger and bulkier than BCCH with extensive rusty flanks, rich brown cap (blackish around the eye), gray extending from the nape onto the cheek, gray wings and tail lacking white fringing of BCCH, and brownish mantle (slightly lighter than the head). As Sue Finnegan observed, the appearance of certain features (i.e. the rusty flanks and brown cap and mantle) seemed to vary with the lighting, with all of them appearing more bright and saturated in direct sunlight. Vocalized infrequently, almost always on approach to a feeder. Mostly heard giving 'psip' calls but did utter seets and chitters (each once or twice). Did not hear it giving its classic chick-a-wheez-wheez. Quite possibly my favorite rarity I've ever seen on the Cape. Many thanks to the Hights for graciously allowing birders to come see this fantastic bird. Many photos, BOC shot for now.
